This very impressive 13
½" tall
finial
came off of an antique rope bed that I have owned and used in our guest bedroom for over thirty years. Finial
weighs almost 3 pounds - the exact weight is 2lb. 14.3oz. The base is
4.3” in diameter and it measures 4.75” at its widest point.
I don’t have a lot of experience with either wood types or furniture styles for that matter but I believe it’s English and I’m guessing it is mahogany. I believe to be from around the 1850’s to the 1870’s or so. As mentioned this is just my opinion.
I believe this to be in very good condition showing less than what I would consider to be normal signs of age related use or wear. There are some stress marks here and there that can be viewed in the images as well as an old repair that can also be seen (last 3 pix). The dowel has been repaired and modified at some time in the past.
